The BBC website has an excellent on-line Italian course with different levels and plenty of videos with dialogs explanations, vocabulary and grammar rules.

However, even if you get a grasp of the language basics, then you'll have to deal with the regional accent of your relatives, which in some cases (e.g. calabrese or pugliese) could be like learning the language again…

you're sooo lucky!! I wish I had an Italian or European background! Just google Online italian courses, or free italian lessons, you'll get a bunch of sites... I've tried it before and they are pretty good, I just dont have the discipline to do it everyday :S.... good luck
