How Long Would it Take to Learn Italian in Florence?
October 6, 2008 by admin
Hi
I am thinking of travelling to Florence next year and wanted to learn italian. My mums side of the family is italian and they all speak it and I dont so I would like to finally learn it. How long do you think it would take to learn italian if I was doing 4 hours contact time, going on excursions and living in Florence. I can understand a bit but not speak it very well.
Thanks for the help!
To understand the Italian language you must stay more than 3 months, to speak it about 6 months.
You can learn a poor course of Italian in 6 weeks, if you want only to amuse yourself in this excellent city.

The best Italian in Italy is spoken in Florence, or Firenze, and I think that if you start learning it right now, and reading anything in italian you will developed a very good understanding of the language. I never attended one class but learnt by myself and read newspapers and books in italian, so I got a good base. I was in Italy three times and in a week I was talking to everybody in italian. Maybe what it helps is that I`m an Argentinian, and italian and spanish have the same base: latin, and besides every letter in the alphabet has one sound. One of the few differences es j which doesn`t exist and is supplanted by i.

I'm sure that you'll learn italian very well if you live here.
I don't speak very well english, I've studied it at school only.

You'd learn very quickly being in Italian, particularly in Florence, where the national dialect is from.
If you want to brush up on some Italian before you go, have a listen to http://www.survivalphrases.com , it's a site that teaches languages to people who are travelling. Sounds like you!
