I never attended one class but learnt by myself and read newspapers and books in italian, so I got a good base. I was in Italy three times and in a week I was talking to everybody in italian. Maybe what it helps is that I`m an Argentinian, and italian and spanish have the same base: latin, and besides every letter in the alphabet has one sound.
