It really depends on you- how long will you stay there and whether you'll be taking courses there, etc.

Any tourist town in Italy speaks a lot of English. Florence has tons of tourists even in the winter! It's crazy. But Italians are still dominant.

I recommend posting fliers around town (and by the Universities) saying that you're an American looking for Italians interested in a conversation exchange so you can improve your Italian.

That is how I met many Italian friends and how I am now fluent in the language. KEY- meet friends, they will love you once they see how interested you are in learning Italian.
I was invited to live with some Italian students for a few months (they're extremely hospitable!).

Hi

I am thinking of travelling to Florence next year and wanted to learn italian. My mums side of the family is italian and they all speak it and I dont so I would like to finally learn it. How long do you think it would take to learn italian if I was doing 4 hours contact time, going on excursions and living in Florence. I can understand a bit but not speak it very well.

Thanks for the help!

To understand the Italian language you must stay more than 3 months, to speak it about 6 months.
You can learn a poor course of Italian in 6 weeks, if you want only to amuse yourself in this excellent city.
