I learned some spanish back in high school, so I do have some language experience. I’ve heard that can make the process a bit easier. I’d love to learn italian, as a hobby; just for the heck of it & to expand my knowledge. but I’m worried it will be super hard. And what’s the best way to go about learning it– Books/cds, etc?

Well I'm an italian girl and I want to improve my english. If you know some spanish you'll understand better italian but don't think it'll be the same thing because spanish and italian have similar words but they are quite different. Anyway if you want to learn italian I'm here (I also know latin as we study it in Italy). You can write me an e-mail. Bye.

I'm currently learning Spanish and Portuguese and would like to learn Italian as well. The thing about it though is that I probably won't be able to take classes to learn the language (I'm already a doulbe major doing International Business and Spanish and plan to pick up a minor in either Mandrin or Japanese). So for this reason I am thinking about just learning the language on my own. I'm doing this with Portugues right now and have been pretty successful. But I'm not sure if that's simply because I'm learning Spanish in school and Portuguese is very similar to it. Is Italian similar enough to Portuguese and Spanish where I'd be able to learn it on my own? Thanks in advance!

Absolutely not. I speak it and I am Romanian. It would be a breeze for you since you speak Spanish and Portuguese. Italian is a lot simpler than Portuguese because it has no nasal sounds – Port has 10 I believe.

Go for it! You'll love the language. It just rolls off your tongue.

I studied French, Italian, Spanish, German, Polish, Arabic, Russian, Romanian (mother tongue), and Chinese during the course of my life. I do not speak all of them, but I can certainly tell you what's easy and what's not.

I know alot of americans go there and other different people to. Is italians still dominating florence? I want to learn the italian languague, but worried everyone will speak english. Is it that bad, or is thier tons of italians?

It really depends on you- how long will you stay there and whether you'll be taking courses there, etc.

Any tourist town in Italy speaks a lot of English. Florence has tons of tourists even in the winter! It's crazy. But Italians are still dominant.

I recommend posting fliers around town (and by the Universities) saying that you're an American looking for Italians interested in a conversation exchange so you can improve your Italian.

That is how I met many Italian friends and how I am now fluent in the language. KEY- meet friends, they will love you once they see how interested you are in learning Italian.
I was invited to live with some Italian students for a few months (they're extremely hospitable!).
