A couple years, at least. You should supplement with lessons from other sources that are different. Michel Thomas is relaxed & you listen while he teaches two students. He has tidbits about everyday usage if you were to speak to an Italian. Mastering Italian is also good. Developed by the foreign service institute.
This covers more ground than one style of learning and it helps with changing that internal English grammar. You also need to use the language. Practice speaking, read it, listen to it.

I am thinking of travelling to Florence next year and wanted to learn italian. My mums side of the family is italian and they all speak it and I dont so I would like to finally learn it. How long do you think it would take to learn italian if I was doing 4 hours contact time, going on excursions and living in Florence. I can understand a bit but not speak it very well.

To understand the Italian language you must stay more than 3 months, to speak it about 6 months.
You can learn a poor course of Italian in 6 weeks, if you want only to amuse yourself in this excellent city.

I am a student learning italian as well, and have being for around 3 months (tre mesi!) Please correct me if you feel I have made any mistakes.

Below is the vocab that you may want to cover after you have viewed the video, because learning to speak italian is wonderful, however it is also important to learn to read and write in italian too!

*please note also that there are formal and informal ways to speak italian, just like in english. I will be focussing on formal phrases.
