Italian and Spanish share a huge amount of vocabulary as well as many grammatical features. For example, the genders and verb conjugations are similar. Russian is a fun language to speak, but its endings and some of the grammar will be unfamiliar to you, and the stress is said to be so unpredictable that you have to learn it one word at a time. Either language will be a lot easier for you if you learn Interlingua first. Castellina found that people learned Interlingua so well in six days that they could write texts in it. The average may be closer to 15 days for speakers of English, but that's still very fast. It very likely makes Interlingua the one easiest language. So, it’s a more extreme case of “easiest first.” According to Gopsill, you can learn Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, French, any Romance language in about half the time after you've learned Interlingua. It works with other languages as well. I actually did this myself. I was practically fluent at Interlingua in about two weeks, and then I learned another language easily, Spanish in my case. When I was in college a lot of latinas took Italian because it was easy but new enough to not be a bore. If you're in college, check out what kinds of stipends and grants the Russian program has. Since the Cold War the interest for learning Russian has dropped but a lot of the funds are still sitting there unused. You might get a free trip overseas or a paid internship.
